Well I lied a little Nick, if you have the right driver it is a doable
problem.
I now have the sweet tones of the PCI modem dialling out and learned a lot
of useful commands in the process.

I am aware though that the victory will be short lived. As suggested by the
team all signs are that these drivers will be unsupported in 2.6.

Well as I suspected even after I've dialled out the Xandros wizard does not
detect the winmodem ham driver - makes me think of not selecting Xandros but
using standard Debian rather than a customised wizard driven distribution.

I suppose you might be interested what the problem was.

The driver was all installed and loaded OK.
Friendly chap at discuss at linmodems.org was helpful although felt I was
wasting his time a bit.

His notes are below:
___________________________________________________________
# modprobe ham
should load the drivers, if the /dev/ham port is present. Check with lsmod
# lsmod | grep ham
If the drives have loaded, Install the wvdial package (if not already).
/dev/ttyS14 and 15 are reserved for experimental usage. Set a symbolic link
# ln -sf /dev/ham /dev/ttyS14 (do use the captial S)

Check with
# ls -l /dev/ttyS14

# wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf
will test all /dev/ttyS* for modem functions

If successful, edit /etc/wvdial.conf as indicated. Then dailout with
# wvdial
____________________________________________________________

For me all tests worked OK and wvdial was successful.
Now need to automate the process.

Philip
