I agree with you to some extent, that technical skills are transferable, but
the issue here (as I read it) is less about IT expertise or whether YOU CAN do
the job, more about how to get your CV past people like corporate HR, other
managers & the recruiter's who IMHO do at times have limited to poor
interpretation & understanding of assessing a person's IT skills & also
corporate needs for IT skills.
There are documented cases (I can point you to some if you like) of senior
corporate & government IT managers ignoring Linux & ticking "Other" on "OS
used?" questionaires, then explaining that the business uses Red Hat instead.
Not to be specific, but because they had no idea what Red Hat actually is.
So a good CV is written to get a tick from non-technically competent managerial
types who may filter out a CV they don't understand, as well as technically
competent types who do realise that RHCE is an acceptable Linux qualification,
not simply a "Red Hat" ticket.
I still reckon it's good advice :-)
