Colin,

It depends on what they use to provide the access. A very common 
solution is Cisco VPN which is easily installed onto a linux system. 
However having said that Mandrake 10.0 uses the 2.6.x kernel which 
currently has a problem with the Cisco VPN client, this has been 
resolved by Cisco but the patch is not yet readily available.

It is very easy to set up the Cisco vpn 3000 client. Three simple steps ...

1) Ensure you have the kernel source headers and devl packages installed
2) Run the install script
3) Reboot and run the vpn start command

If your wife can find out what the "external access" type is I'm sure 
someone on this list will have a solution.
