If connecting to a Windows NT/2000/XP server, then
PPTP or IPSEC are your best bets. They are just
encrypted tunnels set up between the two systems, over
the Internet. No additional software is required.
IPSEC is standard with 2.6 kernels. To set up the
tunnel, see something like this:
<http://lartc.org/howto/lartc.ipsec.html>
For 2.4 kernels, IPSEC can be done using the FreeS/WAN
patches <http://www.freeswan.org/>.
PPTP is full of holes, but if work runs NT, it may be
the only option. Another e-mail on this list gave the
sourceforge address for a PPTP kernel patch, and you
will probably also need to enable GRE tunnels in the
kernel config. I tried setting up PPTP once, but
never got it working properly.
Best of luck.
Cheers
Tony
