[wellylug] Linux on yourCV

Seems there is significant divergence on what format is acceptable to
recruiters.
I know of one recruitment agency that uses Word Perfect - has done for years
- but still requires CV's sent in MS Word.
I have tackled several agencies about demanding the use of MS Word and was
told this (condensed)
- Using a widely accepted format is easier for their databases to handle
- Formatting is reproduced consistently
- Fewer compatibility issues
I proposed to these companies that, in the interests of avoiding viruses
that pose as macros, they should use a simpler approach such as HTML, PDF,
or RTF (Rich Text Format). The former were considered too difficult for
people to use, especially converting to PDF, and the last one was not used
because it is a format that is copyright to Microsoft (like Word isn't?).
Plain text was rejected outright as 'not professional'. Given that most
agencies add their own stuff, or rewrite CV's, for potential employers, I
considered this last as facetious at best.
Anyway the bottom line is that unless there is a lobby of people crying for
a change nothing is going to happen.
AND given that this is potentially a political discussion and suitable for
it, I recommend this is taken up through NZOSS instead and ask them to lobby
the cause across all of New Zealand.
BTW I still get job descriptions written (extremely poorly) in MS Word, and
I have to wonder at the capability of the companies that send these details
out in that format - aren't they being inconsiderate to potential employees
by sending unprotected documents that may be altered and misrepresented?
Given the low incidence of PDF editors out there this would be a safer
format, or HTML through their websites only. But I digress.
Colin

Ahh but no you aren't a failure in that or any other area Damon. Everyone is
'influenced by others', it's part of being alive. The trick is who *you*
allow to influence you and why... There will always be people who disagree
with your choices but that is also part of being alive.
Carl - starting to digress...

Yes I thought so too. I must confess in this area I am somewhat of a large
failure ;-) hahahahaha.
