that's how just about every pda email client i've ever used operates..

you download things in 5-10k lots. you can then determine if you want to 
download the next 5-10k based on whether the email can wait till you get to a 
cheaper connection , or if you've got all the info you need so far becasue 
the sender has nicely top posted. (which is an unspoken rule on most mailing 
list pertaining to PDA and mobile platforms)
