I actually have been playing around with the apt sources, and I
suspect I've stuffed them up completely (but had a lot of fun doing it
- isn't that Linus' motto?). I can always reset them using dselect, or
look directly at the /etc/apt/sources.list file as you suggest - I
haven't editted it directly before but I suspect it's a relatively
straightforward config file?

I didn't try dpkg-configure, that sounds good I'll have a go.
When I used locate I found several directories that looked promising,
but they were empty - possibly not configured? Seems strange.
I don't know what apropos does, but I'll be keen to type it into the
command line blindly and see what pops out.

Thanks for your help, I'll try these suggestions. But I am still
curious to know what diallers other people use, and which is 'best' to
use from the command line?
