Just to clarify - are you actually talking about forking Linux (the
kernel), or just the distros?

I can think of reasons to fork the kernel, but they're not the ones
you've mentioned.

Otherwise, it seems to me that its up to the distros - there have been
suggestions of that on the debian-user mailing list: now that Ubuntu
seems to provide quite a nice desktop-oriented Debian-based distro, some
have suggested a server-oriented one that can get all the apache and
kernel and whatever security patches without being bothered with the KDE
and Gnome ones. Is that what you're talking about?
