Someone once said that there are no stupid questions, only stupid
answers.... Someone also said if you don't ask you don't learn.
Open up an xterm (terminal window) and type just "harddrake" without
the quotes. I haven't a clue what will happen next as I don't run
Mandrake! However it will probably probe your hardware and may or may
not find your modem.
As far as compiling stuff is concerned you possibly need the
kernel-headers and/or glibc-dev or whatever Mandrake calls it. These
will be RPMs available from Mandrake or mirror sites. Or you may be
able to locate them through a Mandrake tool. Best consult a Mandrake
expert. Debian does it differently.
If you have several PCs, you might like to look at running a Linux
firewall/router and connect ll the client PCs to it via a hub or
switch. But, by analogy with the educational system, that's probably a
200 level problem.
