The OOo equation editor is very impressive and, in my opinion, easier
to use than the Word monstrosity (too mouse-intensive).  There is an
MS Equation importer, although I've never used it.

OOo has StarBasic for macros, or can interface with python/php etc. 
You will have to reprogram the VB stuff though -- no straightforward
conversion that I know of.
