I'm not very familiar with LaTeX, but as I recall it involves many backslashes?

Anyway, OOo's formula editor uses very much plain English:

e.g. 'a ^ 2 sub b over x' gives an 'a' with a superscript '2' and a
subscript 'b', all over 'x'. There is no LaTeX import/export built
into my version, although it will do MathML and StarMath.

(Having extolled its virtues, I have to admit that I'm having a wee
problem with the formula editor's use of symbol fonts at the moment.
It worked fine on Windows at work (eek)).
