For most symbols (including greek letters), yes.

\frac{a^2_b}{x} is the LaTeX equivalent.  The OOo formula language
sounds a lot like the WordPerfect 5.1 formula language, which I remember
as being somewhat verbose and error-prone.  But still miles better than
the fifteen-clicks-to-get-anywhere MS Word equation editor.
