The Brother 5140 works fine, I've sold a few for use with with Linux, see
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Brother-HL-5040
for details. The 5140 is compatible, just a later model of a similar printer.

The "best" low-end laser for Linux IMHO (& often similar sentiments expressed
in reviews) is the Kyocera 1010. Postscript, very cheap to run, reasonable
performance.... A bit pricier than other low-end laser printers, but they
aren't Postscript & don't have a ceramic drum.

I'm still running a Kyocera FS-800 I bought second hand about 3 yrs ago.....

see
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Kyocera-FS-1010

Basically, for a low end laser printer, if $$$ are tight, the Brother is prob
the way to go, if you want Postscript, cheaper running costs & generally better
reliability, go with the Kyocera.
