The Debian installer puts 2.4 on by default, but you can ask for a 2.6 kernel
right at the start of the install and then that's what you'll get.  I'm running
the Debian-installed 2.6.7 at the moment (because when I built my own, I broke
something and now the keyboard doesn't work, and I haven't had time to try to
figure it out yet).
