That was a Woody iso.  You can select a 2.4 kernel at install-time by
typing bf24 at the lilo stage.  Alternatively, install using a 2.2
kernel, then install a 2.4 kernel using apt.  No need for a
dist-upgrade.  If you couldn't get the 2.4 option at install using
bf24, you had a broken iso.

As for Sarge, it will default to 2.4, and give you the option of 2.6.

But hey, use what you like.  That's the beauty of open-source.
