You're starting to discover why I abandoned xterm permanently. Too many
unexpected effects and strange legacy (in)compatibilities. It's also heavy
on memory and 90% of it's functionality goes unused by typical
users. Lighter terminals like aterm, rxvt and rxvt-unicode are my weapons
of choice now.
Don't get me started on using Pine in an xterm... (yes, it looks like it
works, doesn't it...)
