I have a compaq 700 Series laptop, and before 2.4.26 when I hit the
Toggle screen key combination it would crash the entire machine -
killing the kernel, and a reboot would be needed,

I know this is not going to help you -- but after 2.4.26 and in all the
2.6 kernels I have run so far, my key combination for switching is
working fine..

Really what I am saying is what Kernel Version you using? -- you may
like to upgrade the kernel and see if the problem is still there?
