My bad... Sorry for the double post...
Also befpre 2.4.26 there was an Application called s3switch that would
do it for you, although you needed to be root, but that"May" have been a
permission issue on s3switch it's self more than a limitation on a non
root user being able to switch the output..
Check out and see if there is a similar application
(You didnt make mention of kernel version or graphics chip)
