Hi Tristan
I'd personally go with Knoppix (or Gnoppix) to try out first, and see if
your laptop is supported well enough to put a full distro on it.
I've been having a play with Knoppix on my flatmates Compaq Presario
1200 laptop, and everything works perfectly, including the touchpad
(admittedly, it is an old model).
