I run Debian on a Laptop --
It's more of a kernel thing more than a disto thing that handles all the
things you are talking about there...
I use 2.6 because it handles all that you are talking about better than
2.4 -- However Suspend is still not supported on most laptops - but
there is software suspend... Never got it going my self...
