I'd say that points to a problem in the setup somewhere. As you say
it's a well known card, and should be supported. Have you just tried
just insmodding the driver? Can't remember if you mentioned this? Ah,
if the driver is there of course...back to the original problem.

I've noticed that sometimes a network card is not detected even though
it *should* be, and an insmod (of the appropriate module) gets it
going. Or sometimes even just restarting networking.
