[wellylug] Is SUSE a desktop distro? (AARRGGHH!)

Hi Andrej,

A jump to an assumption :-)

This box is well over a year old, 32Mb MX440 graphics are hardly bleeding edge.
Barely available as new hardware today coz it's so old :-)

Every other distro I played with, even a year ago, had no problems. Just this
copy of SUSE 9.1 personal. SUSE 9.0 from the Installfest worked fine. SUSE 9.1
doesn't (at least this copy).

And my problem was not with the graphics, I haven't bothered trying that, that
was a problem Ian raised. My problem was NIC autodetection, which I haven't had
trouble with for years now.

I'd agree that there may be a hardware problem, but for the fact that YAST's
list of network devices to configure manually _DOESN'T INCLUDE THE CHIPSET_.

I figure I could put in a $5 10/100 Realtek card in there & it would work fine,
but that isn't the point. Every other Linux I've tried over the last couple of
years has worked. But a brand new SUSE doesn't.

So, sorry, but that doesn't add up to a hardware/driver problem. If it was
listed in YAST, I'd blame Nvidia (or Shuttle) for a non-standard implementation
which the normal install can't find. It isn't.

I used the Nvidia chipset driver under Mandrake 8 (from memory) & it worked
fine, back with new hardware.

Are you using the standard X11 nv driver or Nvidia's 3D accelerated graphics
nvidia driver? The standard driver works fine, but don't play Tuxracer :-)

Basic out of the box X graphics support isn't a problem. Never has been AFAIK.

But given the apps I wanna run are all wrapped up for SUSE, and an A64 version
has been built, I'm persevering with SUSE to try & get it working properly.
Should still be easier than trying to get everything working together on
another distro.

Cheers,

  Brent
