thanks David,

I tried eix first, but it had a weird error whilst compiling, so I tried
esearch.

It has the same problem. I think the problem is around the ablity to
generate index information.

When I run 'eupdatedb' to update all the package information, it
displays this:

* indexing:
* esearch-index generated in 0 second(s)
* indexed 0 ebuilds
* size of esearch-index: 0 kB

It's like it doesn't know where to look to find the ebuilds, however the
variables in make.conf, make.global, make.profile are fine, and I can
install packages, which means that it must know where it is.
