I used to use 'emerge -s' - I assume that's the same thing?

However I then used 'esearch' for a while, which was far better, but slow 
to index. Now I use 'eix' and it's brilliant. I recommend checking it out. 
Not sure if it helps you with your problem tho...

As for looking at what files it reads, use 'strace -eopen emerge --search 
...' as a starting point. You might need to use -f too.
