[wellylug] emerge --search

hi all,

would anyone be able to tell me how 'emerge --search' works?

I want to know what files it looks into.

I've been trying to get portage to work for Jedo Linux, as that's what
I'm using to package everything in the new version, and it all works
except the search command.

No matter what I search for, even simple things like 'emerge --search
vim' returns 0 results, despite the ebuilds existing
(/usr/portage/editors/vim).

Is there another file it checks, that I'm missing, or do I need to run
some special command to build a search cache?

I have tried using 'emerge metadata' & 'emerge regen', but they made no
difference.

I had a look at the source, but I don't know python, and it doesn't have
many comments. :-(

thanks,
