you may find it pointless, but the GPL requires it. deal.

it may be more efficient for you, but that is at the expence of whoever
provides the source. that person may not appreciate being slashdoted
because your product is so popular. 

can you guarantee that the place you point to will be there in 3 years?
you can't, therefore you must provide the source yourself.
