Not 100% sure about Gnoppix, but Knoppix (and others like Morphix, Gentoo 
LiveCD, GNUSTEP LiveCD, etc) is a Live CD which means it's a 
fully-functional Linux distribution that runs directly from CD 
(typically). This means you don't need to install it on a hard disk to try 
it out. Useful for things like repair CDs, firewall distros, and demoing 
Linux to Windows users.
