Gnoppix is a LiveCD (boot and run from the CD) based on the GNOME
desktop. It used to be a Knoppix variant, but recently started basing
their code off the Ubuntu Live CD.

Knoppix is probably still the most widely used Live CD, based on the KDE
desktop. The boot scripts for Knoppix were once the most accurate and
widest ranging x86 hardware detection. Of course, new packages like the
hotplug/udev combination or discover2 give the Knoppix scripts a good
run for their money.
