You forgot to mention the great news for Sun, which will be able to 
continue to sell its (overpriced? I don't really know) hardware, and 
won't lose more clients who were going to migrate to linux/i386 (on 
some markets, at least...).

That said, I think that this is a great news for everyone: great 
software now available to the community, whatever was the real reason 
that led to the decision :)
