Sun's x86 and low end Sparc systems are pretty well priced and they are

absolutely right clients were migrating, and now there is little reason
to do so as all the benefits of Linux on x86 are provided by Solaris on
x86 and all the previous downsides (like vendor lockin) have been removed.

I was trying to find a link to an explanation that Sun gave that summed
it up really well (but can't find it). But essentially many of Sun's
customers wanted it, Sun's own engineering force wanted it and more
importantly the majority of the developer community wanted it (it just
took a while for the marketing droids to understand this need!). Sun
knows that it is dependent on the support of the developer community and
that a thriving developer community means a thriving Sun.
