Of course, this depends on what standard you are looking to - world domination 
vs. continued existence, for example.

But (some of) the beauty of the GPL is that no one can ever say "you can't use 
this code" ever again.

GNU/Linux could be stopped by permanent worldwide electricity failure or 
permanent worldwide manufacturing failure (the hard drives would all 
eventually stop spinning), but barring something on that scale, GPL code is 
available for anyone to pick up and use.

Perhaps we'll all stop using computers in my lifetime, but I don't expect it.

I'd say Linux *is* viral, but then, so is good will (although each of us has 
varying resistance).
