Many Australian schools use BlueJ as an IDE for teaching intermediate 
age and up to develop Java programs. It's purpose built for people new 
to programming.

Haven't tried it myself, it may be a little tough for an 8 year old.

Let me know if you find anything that is good. My daughter has just 
turned 8 too!
