ATI support for anything other than 2D has been pretty poor, but the
x.org people are making rapid progress with fully open-source drivers
now that they have split from the old Xfree crowd.  Check out the
latest release notes or CVS at freedesktop.org.

Might be a short-term vs. long-term decision to make here (I see Brent
said the same thing).

FWIW, I have a very cheap ATI Mach 64 card, which works moderately
well with the open-source ATI driver (no 3D in Debian's X yet, but
x.org are onto it).  I like not having to rely on the vendor to update
a binary driver when major kernel versions change (or, for example,
when udev gets changed, or page-table size gets altered, ...).
