I can't answer this question ...

But I can say this: I use windowmaker, not Gnome or KDE.  But in order to get
Firefox and Thudnerbird talking to each other (so I can, eg, click on a link in
an e-mail message and have it open in a tab in Firefox), I had to use Gnome's
configuration tool.

The tool is called gconftool-2; there is a GUI for it called gconf-editor which
I actually used.  I can't actually tell you what configuration files it is
editing, but it may be helpful for you...
