If you already have an iPod this will not be very useful but others
considering similar purchases my find this of use.

I was looking for a hard-drive based music player that would function
properly with GNU/Linux with minimum fuss. I considered iPod,
Creative and iRiver players at first. A bit of google searching
revealed that all of these (I'm less sure about iRiver than the
others) required special drivers or software in order to load music
onto them from Linux. They all operated as portable drives without
too much effort.

I then stumbled across the iAudio M3.

The iAudio is available in 20Gb and 40Gb models. No special
consideration needs to be taken to load either music or arbitrary
files onto the unit - it appears as a removable drive and you can
simply copy music files into any directory you like and play them. It
handles MP3, Ogg, FLAC, WAV, ASF and WMV. It apparently does not work
with DRM protected WMA. I have only used it with MP3 and Ogg which it
does very well. Upon plugging it into my system for the first time it
automagically mounted and a file browsing window appeared.

The only "compatabilty" issue I have found is when unmounting the unit
the display still shows "Do not disconnect". Some people have
reported in forums that this occasionally happens in Windows as well.
Also, on occasion I need to restart fam (file alteration monitor)
before the drive can be unmounted.

I use Ubuntu Warty.
