The iRiver H-series doesn't *need* special software to load stuff onto it. 
Special (and opensource) software is needed to construct the database for 
a certain mode of operation. I don't use that mode and it's definitely not 
essential.

After mastering UDEV, whipping up some nifty rsync scripts and learning 
about fat32 mount options I was able to construct a pretty nifty system.

/dev/iriver1    /mnt/iriver     vfat  user,noauto,shortname=win95  0 0
