Since dmix was also mentioned in the discussion about sound here's a link with
some information about it.

Here's some further information about using esd and dmix for those applications
that desire esd over alsa, eg, gnome games! It contains Ubuntu references but it
looks like you can safely ignore them for you specific distribution.

Of specific note is how it says to use 'aoss esd' - instead of just plain 'esd'.
Rob, looks like you can just keep esd disabled from the gnome-sound setup but
add 'aoss esd' to your session management to load when you login.
Probably want to pass the -nobeeps option too. See above links.
