I have been using Debian on my main system for several years now, and
have never ever struck a dependency issue using apt-get. Of course, I
stick with stable + backports on that system which might decrease the
potential for trouble.

I have had problems when I tried to downgrade a test system from mixed
stable/unstable to pure stable, but I can't imagine RPMs coping well
with downgrades either.
