Serial console? :)  Just tell Linux (at the bootloader) to use the serial 
port for it's console. You can even log in if you have it set up right. 
Would be a problem if you don't have a serial port however, but most old 
machines would. That's my last resort before hauling monitors around if 
the network fails to come up.
