I've configured headless systems in the past with varying degrees of
success.  While serial redirection is now common on server class
machines it's not at all common on consumer grade systems.  Without
serial redirection you won't see the POST or be able to configure (or
examine) BIOS settings.  This can often be a problem during
troubleshooting.  In every other regard it works well however.

Suffice it say that I now use KVM switching rather than serial at home
for the sake of universal convenience.
