Something like squirrelmail basically acts as an IMAP client to exchange
on behalf of the user. This works quite well, but needs IMAP to be
enabled in Exchange settings. Obviously appropriate firewalling would be
in place to prevent external users directly connecting to exchange.
I've used a variety of IMAP clients to connect to Exchange, and
squirrelmail should be no different. There are also a variety of other
web-based IMAP clients that you could use.
