Hi Josef,

I think Ubuntu is worth trying and certainly installable by someone new to 
Linux.

You can usually get copies of distro CDs at a local LUG meeting - I'm sure 
someone here will offer you a copy of one if your friend decides what they 
want to try.

You can also download them - once again, pick a few distros and someone 
can tell you where to get them.

Some shops like Dick Smiths also sell certain distros but you have to pay 
a bit of money for them. Might save a lot of time and hassle however?

My advice would be to try a couple of distros out, perhaps using LiveCDs 
(which means you don't have to install them). The Ubuntu LiveCD is a good 
start.
