Another factor is how much computer knowledge they have.  I had very 
little when I switched, and found mandriva relatively easy, with good 
support from their mailing list.  I also tried ubunutu but found the 
partitioner tool difficult as a newbie.  Since then I have tried quite a 
few but tend to go back to mandriva.  Mepis is another that might be 
okay for a newbie, though again I did have a bit of trouble initially 
getting installed.  But guess that's not an issue as they have you to 
help with that.
