Mine are always on. I have a dedicated 802.11g link going between the
downstairs and upstairs (hidden, encrypted, restricted as much as
possible so that only the devices at either end are part of that
wireless network - err, at this stage NO I don't want people finding
holes in it thank you very much!). And a separate link that is for
devices such as the laptop connecting to the network.

I've done it this way because it seems that yes 802.11g is faster if
there are no 802.11b devices in part of that network. Because my laptop
and other devices I may allow to connect are (could be) 802.11b it would
slow down the speed between floors. Currently it is not really an issue
because usually I only have the cable modem downstairs - but I am at
home crook today sitting on the couch using the laptop plugged into the
wired network downstairs, but accessing my webmail server upstairs at
full wireless speed.

Of course, I should be myself organised to stick a wired network between
floors and into each room - then things would be even better and I would
just need the one wireless network (an only because I couldn't be
bothered running cables around the room).

But what the hell, he who dies with the most toys wins, right? :-)
