When you say "real" serial modem, is it external? If so, the
following will be helpful. If not, less so.

echo -e 'bla' > /dev/ttyS0
(Press Ctrl-C to cancel).
If you have found the right port, the 'TR' modem light should go on
when you enter the command and go off when you cancel it.
If it doesn't work, try again with /dev/ttyS1, /dev/ttyS2, /dev/ttyS3.
If none of those work, what is the output from (again, as root):
for i in 0 1 2 3; do setserial /dev/ttyS$i; done
