Um...

If it was an unused "XP" partition (whatever that type of partition is) 
then how could your mouse work if that partion is unused? Surely 
any attempt to boot from an unused partition would simply fail.

No.

It implies that none (not one) of those devices exists.

Why are there *any* error messages when booting?

Should have no error messages.

Have you tampered recently with the BIOS settings?
