If the two machines are in different location (i.e. controlled by
different firewalls) then you might find that the RedHat machine's
firewall is timing out inactive sessions earlier.

In those cases, you can try tweaking keep-alive options on ssh ...
sometimes that doesn't work, and in those cases I've taken to running
spinner, a nasty hack program that just keeps sending NOP characters to
/dev/tty ...
