It's sorta fixed.. I can now access all the partitions and data..
after running gpart... but I can't boot the windows yet. I'm none
too keen to try "FIXDISK" again, but might try "fixmbr" on the
windows recovery. I was tempted to trash the windows and switch the
machine to fully linux.. but for now i've just exported the
partitions using Ubunut Live CD, and mounted them on my wifes login
on the iMac. Opera M2 mail/web seems to work ok with the stored mail
and pref on the window machine. yay for cross platform programs.

fdisk now gives the following. no extended partitions? :|

ubuntu at claire:~$ sudo fdisk -l /dev/hdb

Disk /dev/hdb: 30.0 GB, 30020272128 bytes
16 heads, 63 sectors/track, 58168 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 1008 * 512 = 516096 bytes

    Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdb1               1        1052      530113+   b  W95 FAT32
/dev/hdb2           19731       19906       88324   82  Linux swap /
Solaris
/dev/hdb3   *       19907       39334     9791586    b  W95 FAT32
/dev/hdb4           39334       58156     9486351    b  W95 FAT32
