I suspect it was merely to force users to do something so they "acknowledged"
acceptance of a new 'contract' because a few days later they sent a letter to
users saying "The products and services that you requested are now activated on
your account. The attached pages contain details of your order" and the next
page said "we are pleased to confirm that the below listed packages, products
and services have been added to your account" and below lists "HighSpeed 10G".
Of course I never ordered anything, nor did the earlier letter bluntly say that
the old service was being discontinued in favour of a new service which I had to
acknowledge by changing the IP address. The letter indicated the change was for
'technical reasons'. It was annoying because I had forgotten how to reconfigure
the ancient Pentium 75 serving as a firewall. In desperation I grep-ed /etc and
some /var directories for the old IP etc and edited them to the new ones and it
worked!
