Have you setup your primary gateway and DNS servers?
You are running Suse so treat Yast as your friend.
Open Yast and select -> Network Devices -> Network Card -> Edit (Your
card) -> Host and Nameserver & Routing
If you can ping a static ip address like the default Telstra default
gateway which is normally 207.xxx.xxx.1 then you are on the network.
Next try pinging a remote ip address like Google: ping 64.233.167.104
If that works then you are on the network and your default gateway
routing is working.
Finally try: ping www.google.com
If your DNS setup is correct then you should be happily pinging again.
If you have more than one PC I would recommend setting up a firewall
PC running a Linux firewall or getting a dedicated firewall device to
sit in between your cable modem and your computers.
